Winnipeg, Aerodynamics Have Long Been An Alfa Romeo Focus

The roots of Alfa Romeo as a company and auto manufacturer stretch long back into the early 1900s. However, even at their outset (and at all times since), advanced aerodynamics have been a core principle of the brand-a guiding light in design, if you will

As a refresher, the early 20th century wasn't exactly pushing the boundaries of aerodynamic technology. In fact, it was a brand-new art form; nothing more than a whisper among the general public, which was still immersed in a sea of horse and carriages. But Alfa Romeo-then known as A.L.F.A. (the "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili," or "Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company")-was there to clear a path to something greater.

Sometime in the early 1900s, Count Marco Ricotti of Milan commissioned Carrozzeria Castagna to put together an all-new vehicle-one, quite bizarrely at the time, was to be made of all-metal and feature porthole windows. A.L.F.A. stepped up, deciding to base the new machine off their existing "40-60 HP" vehicle. The result was a futuristic-looking car that easily managed to stun the people of its day with a wild top speed of 86 mph (139 kph).
